So a few things happened at the zoo today…
I haven’t even officially announced this on my blog yet, but I am currently volunteering at two zoos: Lincoln Children’s Zoo in Lincoln, NE and the more famous… as a matter of fact, number one zoo in the nation, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo. I’ll be working there at the Omaha Zoo as an intern (unpaid) all summer. Not sure where it’ll go, but if nothing else, I’ll establish some excellent experience and skills.
So to the story of today. First there was a new volunteer/intern there who actually interned there a year ago and she returns every now and then. She asked me where I went to college and when I told her in a small town in western Nebraska and that she probably hasn’t heard of it, she insisted that I tell her. So I said at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, NE. Then she said she grew up and went to high school there! Crazy right? She even graduated high school the same year as I did. Unfortunately she’s going for her Master’s now, and I’ve just finished my Associate degree. Nothing like making you feel accomplished right? Just kidding. But seriously, sometimes I look at myself and compare my progress with others… not a good thing to do.
Another cool thing that happened today was right as I opened the door to a room a little baby House Gecko, about the length and half the width of my thumb was right there on the frame! Crazy right? It caught me by surprise to see one. This was not in an exhibit, but just back in the Keeper area. About a minute later in that same room I put my foot in a boot. Then… I felt something… crawling… up my leg… another lizard? Kind of felt funny though… different. I took my foot out and saw ants all over my sock and I literally dumped hundreds out of the boot. YUCK! No wonder the lizard was in that room. We need a few more of them! Needless to say, everything was alright. And I found out later that there are several species of geckos and also some amphibians that are free range. I knew there were some birds and at one time some Golden Lion Tamarins, but never knew about any reptiles or amphibians that roamed free.
Anyways, enough of that for now. I promise to share more stories about unique experiences that I get at the zoo in the future! Thanks for reading!
